While new parents quickly become experts at getting out the door, it can be tricky at first. Be prepared for last minute spit ups and diaper explosions! If you’re planning to meet people, make sure to remind them that babies and young children are unpredictable and to be patient if you are late. Having a pre-packed “to go” bag can be helpful. Essentials include diapers, wipes, plastic bags for dirty diapers, a change of clothes for baby, a new shirt for mom (spit happens), spit up towel, a hat, extra blanket, pacifier (if you use one), and a toy or two. Many parents keep that “diaper bag” for years as wipes, snacks, sunscreen and band-aids always come in handy with kids of all ages!
When venturing out at first, take “baby” steps. Start with a trip to the grocery store for just one or two items or going out for coffee not a whole meal. Newborns are unpredictable so it can be hard to guess when the “right” time might be to get out of the house. Experiment. Try to go to places where it isn’t too noisy or bright – that will increase the likelihood you’ll finish your meal. Ask to sit at a booth or table that might be a bit more private if you are breastfeeding your baby. That can be more comfortable for you too. We believe moms should be able to feed their babies anywhere they wish.
Car trips and plane trips can be a challenge but may also be easier than you think. Driving with a screaming infant can be very stressful. When this happens to you (because it definitely will), if you still have a ways to go it might be best to pull over some place safe, park the car and comfort baby.
